For home gardeners, the decision to grow and plant on their property is determined by the type of soil that exists on their land. The quality of growth that will be experienced when landscaping or planting a garden will be directly factored by whether there is a good layer of soil to work with.
A homeowner who wants to grow a small garden in their backyard will require a top soil, as the topsoil is the main ingredient for growing any plant, whether it's a flower, a vegetable or a tree. Topsoil usually consists of a mixture of sand, manure, clay and silt. In order to get your gardening right, first you need to understand the differences between the types of topsoil.
- Unscreened Topsoil. This type of topsoil contains a mixture of small and large soil particles. Unscreened Topsoil has a coarse consistency that makes it perfect for a sub-soil base as compared to a finer surface soil. An amazing garden landscape can be perfectly created with Unscreened Topsoil, while a finer top soil can be added at a later time.
- Screened Topsoil. A more versatile soil that can be manufactured as per the specifications of the individual customer. Gardeners can choose the consistency of Screened Topsoil. For example- particle sizes of five-eighth or three-quarter inch. Screened Topsoil travels through specifically sized mesh at the time of manufacturing. Screened Topsoil provides a healthier growing space as water and other nutrients flow naturally through it, since consistent particle size is applied to the Screened Topsoil.
The roots of plants grow deeply and freely in Screened Topsoil. This type of soil also provides a greater opportunity for fruit trees to grow tall and bear more fruit.
Both screened and unscreened forms of topsoil have drawbacks. Unscreened Topsoil is more inexpensive than Screened Topsoil, but it is not consistent enough to serve as the right growing medium for trees. The large and small soil particles in Unscreened Topsoil can inhibit root growth and hinder the supply of nutrients. On the other hand, Screened Topsoil is great for growth and allows nutrients to flow effortlessly, but it can be a bit expensive. Gardeners with a budget constraint will generally create only a thin layer of Screened Topsoil, which might not be enough to sustain plant growth.
